Sustain Expo

We went to the Sustain Expo on September 16th. We were surprised at how small it was but we learned some valuable information.

Did you know that there are light switches that don't need wires or batteries? So cool, they save so much energy! Cool info on geothermal heating and cooling as well as some pretty cool other solutions involving heating and cooling. We saw amazing windows and the new central vacuum's that are pretty nifty! These were just a few of the things we saw and experienced.

Fall Opening Social

We were very excited to kick of our new semester with an opening social on September 9th. We enjoyed meeting some new members! Welcome!!! We are excited to see our attendance grow and look forward as it continues to grow!

The West Jordan Water Conservation Park were great hosts. They provided us a center piece that was grown into a wreath. Cynthia is a landscape designer and told us quite a bit about conserving water and the importance of using water conservation in our designs.

We were delighted by a surprise tour of the new building. This new building wasn't quite open so we had to wear hard hats. :) It was cool for us to see this building because it will be the first public building to be Platinum LEED certified in Utah.

They have these shelf things over the windows that allow indirect light to come in.

We were also told about this wall that helps with climate control.

Summer Service Project

For our Summer Semester Service Project a few students went to the Luxury Home Tour and volunteered. They said the homes were gorgeous. They enjoyed being able to assist the tour in keeping the expensive homes safe during the tour. What a neat opportunity.

SL Parade of Homes

We sure had a lot of fun. Thanks Catherine for driving! We were able to see 8 homes including the UP house! Yes, that's a house made from the movie Up. We had a great time recognizing what people may or may not like in a home. We found some homes that had some great overall style and some that just drove us nuts. One house left most of us reeling at the use of cheap flooring. As designers it is a great opportunity to check out these homes to see what others are doing. It is especially fun to check them out with other designers to understand style differences.

3form

Now this was a super fun activity. We really enjoyed see the amazing possibilities that 3form has with it. Our minds were racing with the fun ideas we could use this amazing product with. Did you know that this company is doing great at keeping waste out of landfills? They encourage their employees to be "green" just like they do their best at being green. They have out stamp of approval!

First Student Show

We really enjoyed our student show. A few people brought in projects. We were able to get some feedback from our fellow students as well as Jeri and Mojdeh. It was good to get a look at why something worked and why something didn't. We are hoping to have these shows frequently. We find them of great benefit to our students.

This picture was shared by Michele Lewis. She did a quick sketch and added color rendering to it.

UV Parade of Homes

We had a lovely time visiting 8 of the 20 homes in the Utah Valley Parade of Homes tour as a group. This was a fantastic opportunity that not only let us see beautiful homes but network. Alicia took the opportunity to contact a builder and is now working as an intern for him. We continued looking at other homes as individuals. One of the best parts was the free entrance we got as a club.

May 16th Meeting

Mojdeh was a thrilling speaker at our first summer activity. She gave some real sound advice. She requested that we always keep in touch with her. One of her many reasons is so that she can share success stories with her current students. She also suggested two wonderful books. Branding Yourself and Make a Name for Yourself

Thanks Mojdeh for being our program director, club advisor and a great friend!

We're here

What a thrill it is to be a part of the new interior design club for SLCC. It's been a lot of work for club president Alicia and former officer Kelli. They did a great job in getting us started. Meetings were held at the end of Spring Semester 2011 and we started doing activities Summer Semester. We look forward to Fall 2011 with new officers to support Alicia as the president.
